Deniss Karpak is Estonian Sailor of the Year 2012

24.11.2012
Finn sailor Deniss Karpak has been named Estonian Sailor of the Year 2012 by Estonian Yachting Union.

Karpak had a good year in 2012. He won Kieler-Woche Regatta and came sixth overall in the ISAF Sailing World Cup. Although the 11th place at the Olympic Regatta disappointed the 2m Estonian, he did win a race and was the most successful athlete in the Estonian Olympic sailing team.

This is the 8th consecutive time for 26-year-old Karpak to win Estonian Sailor of the Year title. He has previously also won Estonian Young Athlete of the Year in 2007 after bringing home the bronze medal from Laser Standard World Championships in Cascais.

Karpak is now looking forward to the next Olympic cycle. “I was aiming for a place in the top 10 in London and my biggest hope was to get a medal. I definitely want to be more successful in Rio where I will have the same goals,” Karpak admitted.

In 2013, Karpak’s main focus will be the Finn Gold Cup in Tallinn: “I have big plans for the Gold Cup in Tallinn! Tallinn Bay has very good sailing conditions and it is a great venue for Olympic classes. I am happy that my home country and my home town will be hosting such an important and prestigious event.”

Karpak’s coach Igor Trofymov was named Estonian Sailing Coach of the Year 2012 along with Jaak Lukk, coach to women’s RS:X windsurfer Ingrid Puusta (15th place at the Olympics), and Rein Ottoson, coach to Laser Standard sailor Karl-Martin Rammo (18th place at the Olympics).
